What’s a Grocery Store?

WordPress Image

Up until about middle school, I had no idea what a grocery store was.  Most of you are probably thinking, “How could you possibly not know what a grocery store was?  It’s where you buy all of the foods and drinks you need in a household.”  I agree that this does apply to any ordinary family.  On a military base however, people buy their groceries from the Commissary.

The Commissary is basically the military’s version of a grocery store.  It sells all of the food needed for a household.  The 1st and the 15th of every month are about the worst time to shop at the commissary though, because these dates are when the military gets paid.  Like any other grocery store, shopping on payday at the commissary is absolutely miserable.  You may end up in the store for a couple of hours at least.  If you want to avoid being in the commissary when it’s packed with shoppers, you should either go on a Wednesday or about an hour before closing.  I’ve learned that these are the times when the Commissary is basically empty.

I can still remember when I finally found out what a non-military grocery store was.  I finally found out about them when I was in middle school.  Middle school was one of the first times in my life that I finally lived in a house that wasn’t on a military base.  One day  I was riding around my neighborhood with my friend on our bikes.  After riding around for a couple of hours, my friend asked if I wanted to go to the grocery store down the street to buy a couple of snacks.  When I admitted to not knowing what a grocery store was, he looked pretty shocked.  It took me a while to comprehend the fact that people bought their groceries even outside of military bases.  Before that moment in life, I just assumed that all people just bought their groceries on military bases.

The Difficulty of Keeping Friendships

I am a strong believer in people are nothing without their family.  Your family are the ones who will always be there for you and will always have your back through the good times and the bad.  With this being said, I feel blood is not the only thing that makes a person family.  I have some friends that I consider to be family over some of my relatives that I am actually related to.  These friends have always been there for me in times of need throughout my life.  Not many military brats can say they are fortunate enough to have friends who they know they will always be able to rely on.  I have come across other military brats in my life who have a hard time making friends with others, because they already know that they will not be living in the same place for too long.  I consider myself very lucky to have friends that I know I can rely on.

It is very easy as a military brat to not open up to others.  Knowing that you will not be living in the same place for too long, a military brat may have the mindset of not making friends with others because that friendship will probably not even last that long.  Now someone reading this blog may be thinking something along the lines of, “Well that’s nonsense….. even if a military brat has to frequently move, they can still maintain a long distance friendship with someone else by calling, texting, and even sending letters to that person.”  I know first hand that this is a very difficult thing to do.  Once you move to a different place, it is very hard to keep communication with someone from where you used to live.  Although I have not kept in touch with some friends that I have had in different places, I have also kept in touch with many others.  I also consider myself lucky to be able to say this.
